The City of Oak Ridge Youth Advisory Board (YAB) and the City of Oak Ridge Aquatics Department recently completed a very successful “Water Awareness” program which taught basic water safety to local children. Beth Cannon, Lead Swim Instructor for Aquatics, led the four sessions with the assistance of YAB members each day. Students were taught basic swim techniques, how to play safe around the water, while also learning life-saving tips along the way. Through partners at the Scarboro Community Center and at Girls Incorporated, children with little to no water experience were encouraged to sign up. “This program was only successful because four organizations came together to make it possible”, said Recreation Manager of Athletics and YAB Matt Reedy. “The YAB awarded a free swim lesson for each participant that completed the program and also provided the man-power. The Aquatics Division provided the facility and the certified staffing. Last, but not least, Scarboro Center and Girls Incorporated staffs signed up the participants and delivered them to the pool each day for class. This was truly a community effort.”
There are various ways that you can get involved in Oak Ridge Recreation and Parks programs. Applications for the 2015-2016 City YAB will be available in April 2015 for Oak Ridge students that might be interested in serving. Swim lessons and lifeguarding classes are available with sessions beginning soon. On Saturday, February 14th from noon-4:00 p.m., the Oak Ridge Civic Center is hosting a “Family Day” event. Stop by and inquire about the various programs and classes that are offered.
