On March 10, 2015 at 8:50 A.M., Oak Ridge police officers were dispatched to the Heritage Fellowship Church, 121 N. Illinois Ave., Oak Ridge, in reference to a report of mail theft.  Sgt. Robert Pitts located the suspect, Gregory Scott Tyree, 47, Oak Ridge fleeing westbound on Robertsville Rd near Willowbrook Elementary School.  Sgt. Pitts also recovered evidence along Robertsville Rd. across from Robertsville Middle School, with the assistance of the Pastor who witnessed the theft and followed the suspect.

Mr. Tyree was arrested and transported to the Anderson County Detention Facility for misdemeanor theft.  Further investigation found that Tyree is a registered violent sex offender from a 1994 conviction for aggravated rape and sexual battery.

The Heritage Fellowship Church facility, from where it is alleged Mr. Tyree stole mail, includes a day care center with a plainly visible playground.  Mr. Tyree was in violation of the statue by being on the grounds of a licensed day care center or other child care facility.

On March 11, 2015, an additional charge of felony violation of the sex offender registry law was placed on Mr. Tyree by Officer Ben Haines at the Anderson County Jail.  Mr. Tyree remains in custody awaiting arraignment for his charges and the investigation remains ongoing.
